In this part of the story, where Yamato-Takeru has reached Mount Ibuki in order to subdue its deity, the initial impression I got from his thoughts (of how he would defeat the deity with his bare hands only) was that he was way over his head. He seemed to have become too proud, perhaps due to his earlier success. Therefore he speaks openly here to the white boar, though in the original story he more or less just speaks out loud and not TO the white wild boar.
It should be noted his earlier success might have been caused by the fact his equipments seemingly held sacred powers. Had the outcome been different if he had not left the great sword Kusanagi besides his wife’s bed? We cannot say for sure, but I believe it would have at least postponed his eventual demise. At this point of the story, however, we can see he has become (over)confident of his own personal power, perhaps believing all he has managed was due to his very own wit and prowess.
