Here I have summarized quite a bit. In fact, Yamato-Takeru never returned right after defeating the Kumaso brothers in the West (nor did he ever come back all beat up for that matter). It was part of his original mission to also subdue the deities in the West, which suggests his mission was also a religious one.
As for Idumo-Takeru, Yamato-Takeru also defeated him in order to pacify the lands of Idumo BEFORE reporting back from his mission. I mostly made him return again and again for the joke's sake - and to make it painfully obvious how much his father wants his own son dead.
But returning to the case of Idumo-Takeru, there are some interesting points to talk about, for how Yamato-Takeru defeated him was through deceit. The prince actually BEFRIENDED the man before fooling him to use an imitation sword with which to cross swords with him (in the name of beautiful friendship, I would assume). I am not sure whether I wish to see the Brave Yamato as a very cunning boy or just a downright sociopath.
