There is a bit of a joke here that should be explained.
When I was still but a child, I would watch a certain TV series every weekday –a Batman series from the 1960’s, to be exact. The series was obviously very cheaply made and had intentional and, more often than not, completely impossible dues-ex-machina twists. Two transitions between episodes burned their way into my memories. In the first cliffhanger Batman was about to be drowned in hot syrup by Joker, only to survive in the beginning of the following episode because he ‘just happened’ to be wearing his hot syrup resistant batcape. In the second cliffhanger a torpedo was flying towards Batman and Robin, but -as the following episode graciously taught the audience – the two were saved by a dolphin that jumped in front of the torpedo, sacrificing itself for the good great cause of Batman and Robin.
The sudden appearance of the empress in Yamato-Takeru’s story reminded me of all these impossible moments in the Batman TV series. The introduction of the empress for this one short moment in the story seemed just too convenient indeed.
