When Yamato-Takeru traveled to the land of Sagamu, he got tricked. Fire was set to the plain so that he would be burned alive. However, once again, the divine gifts from his aunt aid him. First he mows away grass with the Kusanagi sword (even the name of the sword literally means "grass mowing sword", which I always found somehow... bland). Then, he uses the fire striking implement he find from the bag and uses them to create counter fire. Don't ask me how that works, though. I have no idea how one can create fire to keep away fire - to me it just sounds like creating much much more fire to suffocate yourself with.
But yes, knowing what kind of a murderous, bloodlust-driven youth he is, the fate of the entire clan of his deceiver was sealed by that one act of deception.
What I would like to know, though, is whether the bag, as a likely sacred object, would have had a different item to present to Yamato-Takeru had he not been fooled now and would have had to use it later on.
